After coming back from Milan, I took off to Luxembourg with my boyfriend for the weekend. I didn't know what to expect, since I didn't know much about the country and city (only that gas and cigarettes are quite cheap there). After spending two days in Luxembourg city, I think it's safe to say that I completely fell in love with the place.
The combination of churches, castles, forests and houses looking as if they could be toy doll houses, turns this city into a picturesque place to stay at. It felt as if we went back in time. The only thing I can do is to recommend everyone to visit this beautiful city.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral, of which the first cornerstone was laid in 1613. Even though I have no religious bone in my body at all, churches always get to me in one way or another. I like to visit them to see the architecture, the statues and everything that comes with it (except for religious services or stuff like that).
I wouldn't mind living in one of these houses.

The Saint Quirin Chapel a.k.a. 'The Church In The Rock'. The chapel was built in the rock of the Pétrusse Valley and is Luxembourg's oldest church. It was already being used in the 11th century and was a pagan site before that.

The statue of Grand Duchess Charlotte on Clairefontaine Square. The duchess reigned from 1919 'till 1964 and was one of the best loved and admired leaders of the country.

Inside the Luxembourg Casemates: underground galleries which date back to 1644, when the Spaniards had to modernize the medieval fortifications. It's current state is thanks to the Austrians, who reinforced the fortress. They became UNESCO World Heritage in 1994. I advise you not to go in there if you suffer from heart diseases or claustrophobia: the very small staircases and corridors could be a problem...
In the late afternoon, we decided to visit the Sandweiler German war cemetery. It's a World War II cemetery and contains the graves of 10,913 servicemen from the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944 and spring of 1945.
We were all alone, which gave a particular vibe to the whole experience. I have a thing with cemeteries: the atmosphere, the silence... It's perfect to walk around and think about all the things in life. We took a rest on top of the cross monument to enjoy the view and silence and to take some pictures, since the sunlight was perfect that afternoon.
Our first day ended with the Tokyo Love sushi set at the Gonki restaurant.
On the morning of our second day in Luxembourg, we decided to visit the American Cemetery and Memorial, where the fallen of the same battle as those of the German cemetery lay buried. There are 5,076 fallen soldiers buried here. Each of the tall wrought iron sections of the gate bears gilded laurel wreaths, the ancient award for valor. Gilded eagles surmount the stone pillars.
Two memorial pylons display the names of 371 Missing in Action. The remains of these soldiers and airmen were never recovered, or rest in unknown graves.
The Jewish soldiers are marked with a star of David-grave.
Since the boyfriend had never eaten macarons before, it was a good excuse to stop by Ladurée.
I decided to see what the hype was all about with these drinks... And for real: they taste like sh*t.
